Time 'against' Claassens

Wednesday, November 05, 2008, 17:26

Bath Rugby head coach Steve Meehan has admitted scrum-half Michael Claassens is struggling to win his fitness fight ahead of Saturday week's Guinness Premiership showdown with Leicester Tigers.

The South African stands to miss his first league game since signing for the club in the summer of 2007 after damaging ligaments in his right knee against Newport- Gwent Dragons on October 19.

"I said a couple of weeks ago that it was at least a four-week injury," Meehan said.

"I've seen Michael this week and he's feeling better about things, but we'll have to see.

"I wouldn't say it's in the balance – I'd say it's against him at the moment with regard to the Leicester game.

"What you've got to remember is it's a long season and he'll only be back when he's right."

Jack Cuthbert, meanwhile, has made a swift recovery from the head injury he sustained while tackling Cardiff's Richard Mustoe last Friday night.

That forced the youngster out of the action, but Meehan said: "My understanding is he got through weight training without any ill-effects and he'll be back in full training next week.

"He should be available for selection by the time the Leicester game comes around."

Experienced duo Danny Grewcock and Andy Beattie returned from bicep and knee injuries respectively at Cardiff, with Meehan reporting both came through their comeback appearances without alarm.

Beattie, who had been out for seven months, may play for a National League side this weekend in a bid to build up his fitness.
